Local authorities currently face the challenge of securing their systems and networks. Organisations must now comply with the Government Connect Secure Extranet (GCSx CoCo).
The GCSx network is a secure electronic communications channel for sharing information between local authorities, central government and wider public sector. It allows:
- Secure access to central government applications and databases
- Secure email exchange between central government, police, NHS and local authorities
- Secure bulk file transfer between local and central government.
Since April 2009, organisations may only access the DWP Customer Information System and other sensitive personal data via a secure connection. This effectively means that organisations must implement Government Connect.
