Capita helps Spelthorne Borough Council launch residents’ smartphone app

29 September 2015

A smartphone app from Spelthorne Borough Council is giving residents access to a range of local services and helping the council to reduce reliance on normal customer service channels.

The ‘Spelthorne Borough Council’ app is free to download and allows users to learn more about council services such as bin collections and parking, as well as make payments and report graffiti, antisocial behaviour or dog fouling.

Residents can also find out about job vacancies and keep up-to-date with local news, events, travel and weather. In addition, the app allows users to find their nearest leisure centre, doctor, recycling centre or library.

Cllr Joanne Sexton, Spelthorne Cabinet Member for Communications, said: “Mobile apps are changing the ways that customers purchase and use services. Residents increasingly expect to be able to access information and services from their council digitally, and Spelthorne needs to meet this demand in order to improve service delivery, increase channel shift and reduce costs.

“We have already seen a 10 per cent reduction in calls to customer services as residents started to use the app to report things, find out information for themselves and make payments.”

The app is based on the Engage platform developed by Capita Software Services. The platform enables organisations to deliver services, transactional tasks, updates and much more to customers via a free app on their Apple, Android and Windows smartphones.

Engage has been developed to ensure a smooth, user-friendly experience, meaning customers can subscribe to and use the services they want to make their lives easier. The Engage management console allows organisations to manage news feeds, design and deploy interactive forms and publish events.

Paul Millard, operations director at Capita Software Services, said: “Engage provides a platform to develop two-way conversations with customers and is ideal for local authorities and commercial organisations.

“Engage is hosted in the cloud and is totally configurable. With no need for coding knowledge or in-depth technical experience to set up, users can develop and publish an app quickly and easily, making it ready and available for customers.”

Residents who download the Spelthorne Borough Council app before 23 October 2015 can enter a free prize draw to win an iPhone 6s.
