Charitable support

At Capita's LGS our staff are incredibly passionate about supporting local and national charities – every year they vote for which charity they would like to support, as a whole business, for the year and then work hard at raising funds together with their colleagues.

For 2009/2010 our staff voted to support The Alzheimer’s Society, but in recent years our beneficiaries have also included Macmillian Cancer Support (for which our staff raised over £33,000 in 2007/2008), The Guide Dogs for The Blind and Cancer Research UK.

When it comes to fundraising projects, our staff lack nothing in the creativity department – you name it, we’ve done it! We carry out our fundraising activities continually throughout the year and we even have our own charity week in November, during which staff carry out a number of special fundraising events across our business sites, including: slave auctions, raffles, tombola, dress-down days, bingo, cake sales, quizzes, sports matches… and that’s just to mention a few.

In addition to the main charity our staff choose to support each year, a number of our sites also hold weekly or monthly fundraising events to raise money for various different local charities, as selected by our staff.

Read on to find out how our staff have contributed to the following charities:

  • The Alzheimer’s Society

    details

In 2009/2010 Capita's LGS is supporting The Alzheimer’s Society which is the UK's leading dementia care and research charity and works to improve the quality of life of people affected by dementia. The Society does this through its 250 branches located across the UK which offer practical services and support to over 30,000 people a week who either have dementia or care for someone with dementia. Through campaigning and lobbying it strives to influence government policies and raise awareness, and through its research programme it works to improve the knowledge we have about dementia and its treatment – and pursuing the ultimate goal of finding a cure.
  • Macmillan Cancer Support

    details

Capita's LGS staff selected Macmillan Cancer Support as their chosen charity for 2007/08 and during that time we raised over £33,000 for the charity.

Macmillan Cancer Support improves the lives of people affected by cancer. It provides medical, practical, emotional and financial support and strives for better cancer care.

To put our donation to this worthy cause into perspective; £35 helps a cancer support group hold its first session, £50 pays for a liquidiser for someone who can’t eat solids and £5,000 provides 67 people with access to a Welfare Benefits Helpline.
  • Cancer Research UK

    details

In 2006/2007 Capita's LGS staff chose to support Cancer Research UK and set a fundraising target of £10,000. The £10,000 that was raised – and exceeded – resulted in our staff being responsible for making a massive difference to Cancer Research UK and the people it looks after.

Cancer Research UK is the world's leading independent organisation dedicated to cancer research. They support research into all aspects of cancer through the work of more than 4,250 scientists, doctors and nurses.
  • The Guide Dogs for the Blind

    details

In 2005 Capita's LGS staff raised £5,000 to sponsor one guide dog, and its training, for a blind person. The dog “Indi” was put through a 12 month training course before being placed with his new owner in Devon, where a real bond has formed between the two.

The Guide Dogs For The Blind has been helping the blind for over 70 years and was set up to provide guide dogs, mobility and other rehabilitation services that meet the needs of blind and partially-sighted people.
